BACS-TAIWAN MANDARIN ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME

BACS administers a competitive scholarship on behalf of the Taiwan Ministry of Education, for two-month summer language courses and one-year language programmes at approved centres in Taiwan. Application deadlines are usually around January of each year, for studentships to be taken up that summer/fall. For information about approved language centers in Taiwan, see http://www.studyintaiwan.org

A monthly stipend of NT$25,000 is provided to cover fees and to contribute to maintenance expenses. The scheme is open to any student on a full-time or part-time Chinese language course provided the student holds a full UK passport. All applicants must have a basic grounding in Chinese.

Two-month Summer Scholarships:
priority will be accorded to highly-rated applicants currently enrolled in full-time single or joint honours degrees, who have previously studied in the PRC or ROC, but who have not previously held one of these scholarships. Preference will be given to more advanced students.

One-Year Scholarships:
Priority will be given to students who are currently enrolled or expect to enrol in a postgraduate degree in which fluency in written or spoken Chinese is a requirement, who show evidence of a research plan leading towards post-graduate studies or who have other career plans where fluency in Chinese is a requirement. Low priority will be given to applicants who wish to take a year out from enrolment in a single or joint honours degree in Chinese.

Students enrolled in UK departments of Chinese must apply through their university department. Departments will be circulated with the Mandarin Enrichment programme Notes for Applicants and Application Form (Word document containing Chinese characters) and other application requirements. If you are not enrolled in a Chinese Department, please contact secretary@bacsuk.org.uk for advice on application and submission procedures.
