FUNDING: RESEARCH / SCHOLARSHIPS / BACS-TAIWAN STUDENTSHIPS

Research Funding

The relevant UK research councils are the AHRC & ESRC which offer funding for major research projects, research fellowships and postgraduate scholarships (for master and doctoral degrees). The latter are mostly from block grants accessed through specific universities, though there are some open scholarships that can be applied for directly.

In addition there are independent UK foundations that support research. The most relevant is the The Leverhulme Trust which offers grants under a number of categories including major projects (up to £500k), research, early career, study abroad  and visiting fellowships,  and international network (collaborative research) grants. Others include: the Nuffield Foundation, oriented towards the law, education, families and society; The Wolfson Foundation, mainly science and medicine and infrastructure, but including research professorships in the arts; the Wellcome Trust, funding medical research including the history of medicine and bioethics; and the Thomson Foundation, supporting media and journalism, and including Xinhua as a partner.
