The British Association for Chinese Studies holds an annual conference at a different British centre for Chinese Studies each year. Attendance is open to all, with a small surcharge for non-BACS members. The BACS Annual General Meeting for members and other scholars interested in Chinese studies is always held in conjunction with the annual conference. The BACS Annual Conference welcomes international and UK based participants, both members and non-members. There are generally distinguished keynote speakers in plenary sessions, specialist panels and postgraduate student sessions. See the left frame for details of past conferences. Studies 2008 Annual Conference: China: Nature and Humanity BACS is pleased to announce that the 2008 Annual Conference will be held in conjunction with The White Rose East Asia Centre at the University of Leeds on 4th-5th September 2008. We thank the White Rose East Asia Centre and the University of Leeds for their support. Leeds has been one of the UK’s leading centres for Chinese studies for more than forty years. The accommodation and meeting rooms will be on the main campus close to the centre of Leeds, with its excellent UK rail links, convenient airports at Leeds / Bradford and Manchester, and just over two hours by rail from London. CENTRAL THEME ‘Humanity’ in the title refers to human activity in the broadest sense, and ‘nature’ refers to interaction with the environment at all levels: physical, psychological, philosophical, artistic, etc. The theme was felt to offer scope for scholars from a wide range of disciplines to address the issue of the Chinese people’s relationship with their environment from a broad perspective. Nature has been an inspiration for philosophy, literature, art and architecture throughout Chinese history from the earliest times. China has a long and distinguished history of working physically with nature in building canals and managing water resources to develop some of the most productive and sustainable agriculture in the world. However, does China’s recent record on pollution mean the Chinese have forgotten how to respect and live in harmony with their environment? We invite individual scholars and panel organisers from both humanities and social science disciplines, researching China from the contemporary world back to classical times to join with us in addressing this theme. As usual, BACS is willing to consider papers on other topics relevant to the interests of BACS and its members. BACS promotes scholarship on all disciplines relating to China, both traditional and modern, and including China proper, other Chinese-speaking areas and the diaspora. As always we welcome papers across the whole spectrum. PARTICIPATION The BACS Annual Conference welcomes international and UK based participants, both members and non-members, to offer papers or just attend the conference. There will be distinguished keynote speakers in plenary sessions and specialist panels. Full details of the programme, the cost of attendance and the application form will be available in due course on the BACS website at http://www.bacsuk.org.uk ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INFORMATION Proposals for papers are now invited. You are invited to submit individual paper abstracts or panel proposals. The working language of the conference will be English. Normally, individual papers will be allotted 30 minutes (20 minutes presentation plus 10 minutes for discussion). Panel proposals should be for a session of between one and two hours (2-4 speakers). Abstract submissions for papers should include: 1. Title of the paper 2. Full name, gender and affiliation of the author(s) 3. An abstract of 250-300 words 4. The first author’s postal address 5. The first author’s email address 6. The first author’s telephone number Panel proposals should include the name and contact details of the panel organiser, the names of the paper givers and abstracts of the papers Submissions should be sent as an email attachment to Don Starr, BACS President, at: president@bacsuk.org.uk DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION: Friday 16th May 2008.
